Future self journaling prompts that end in a number
25 future self journaling prompts about money, a five-minute daily format, what future self journaling is, and how to turn the answers into a balance.
Future self journaling is the practice of writing daily as the person you are becoming, so that today's choices line up with theirs. It was popularised by Dr. Nicole LePera, and most prompt lists that follow it are about identity and feeling. Those are fine. But money is the one area of life where a future-self prompt can produce an answer you can check, and prompts that end in a number produce those answers.
Here is what the practice is, a five-minute format, and 25 prompts where the answer is a figure.
What is future self journaling?
Each day you write a short entry from the perspective of your future self: who they are, what they do, how they handle the situation you are currently in. The claim behind it is straightforward. Your brain treats the future you as a stranger unless you make them familiar, and a stranger's savings account is very easy to raid. A daily entry makes them familiar.
Applied to money, the practice has one extra requirement: future you must have a balance. A future self with "financial ease" is still a stranger. A future self with $48,000 in the year-off fund is a person with a schedule.
A five-minute future self journal format
Four lines, same order each day.
- The number. The vision and the amount, copied out. "Year off · $48,000."
- Future me, one sentence. Present tense, from the date the number clears. "It is Monday and I have not opened work email."
- What future me did today. The single action, in their voice. "I moved the transfer up to $1,000 because the run-rate was short."
- What arrived. Anything that landed for the vision. "Nothing. The standing order cleared."
Ten minutes on day one, five by day five. The format is what keeps it going after the novelty fades.

A future self journaling example
Studio · $25,000 It is Friday and I unlocked the studio door at 7:50. The light was already in. Future me put the Monday transfer up to $600 today because $470 a week was not going to clear by September. Arrived: $180 from the chased invoice. Posted to Studio.
Notice the third line. Future self journaling drifts into fantasy when the entries are only feelings. The "what future me did today" line drags it back to a decision.
Turning answers into a balance
Every prompt above is designed to end in a figure. Once you have one, the practice is to put it somewhere it can grow. Manifesting Bank is that place: open an account, name the vision, attach the number, and wire to future you on a standing order. The account does the daily carrying-forward that paper cannot, and the journal keeps the voice.
For the yearly version of this exercise, write a letter to your future self about money. For the deciding step, how to manifest a specific amount of money.
Frequently asked questions
How do you do future self journaling? Write a short entry every day as the person you are becoming, in the present tense. The format above makes it five minutes.
What is the difference between future self journaling and scripting? Scripting is one long entry from the future about a specific event. Future self journaling is short and daily, and it includes what you did today.
How far in the future should my future self be? The date the number clears. Twelve months is the common default; six is better for a first vision.
What if I do not know the number yet? Prompt one is the number. Sit with it until it has a figure; that is the first week's work.
Is there a future self app? There are letter and journaling apps. Manifesting Bank is the one where future you has a balance.
Builds Manifesting Bank and wires a number to future him most mornings. EDIT ME: two sentences in your own voice.
